Hey there MonsteRiser,

You know that little voice that’s always in the back of your head nagging you?

Well, that voice belongs to Doubt.

I have a love-hate relationship with Doubt. Sometimes Doubt is a great friend, driving me and pushing me to do things I never dreamed I could do. Like moving across the country by myself at eighteen from New Jersey to Montana or leaving my cosmetology career to become an entrepreneur at twenty-five. But other times, Doubt transforms into an evil sorceress who manages to cast me under her spell. I try my best never to fall prey, but Doubt can be quite the force to be reckoned with.

But you know who else is quite the force? Me.

Overcoming Doubt can be scary and overwhelming, but is there anything better than the thrill of defeat? Even if you don’t perfectly succeed at whatever Doubt was trying to steer you away from, the fact that we all have the power to take those doubts and use them to propel forward is truly magical. So, my advice for my fellow MonsteRisers is this:

When in doubt, doubt Doubt!

Now I know that’s a lot of doubt, so let me break it down a bit… When Doubt creeps up on you, don’t just ignore her and turn her away (trust me, this can make her much stronger). Instead, take a second to listen to what she’s telling you, reflect on it, and then go ahead and YOU doubt Doubt.

Doubt says your first date is doomed and you should just stay home?

Doubt her and go on that date!

Doubt says you’re not qualified enough for that job?

Doubt her and go get that job!

Doubt says you’re not strong enough to climb that mountain?

Doubt her and get to climbing!

Doubt says you can’t, you won’t, you shouldn’t.

DOUBT HER and do it anyway!

Even when you have doubs, take that step. Take chances. Mistakes are never a failure, they can be turned into wisdom. - Cat Cora

This is why Doubt can be such a great friend, and why you should learn to love her too. Of course, it’s important to keep in mind that you can still fall prey to her tricks. But I love a challenge and I love proving my monsters wrong, especially Doubt!

I try to think of Doubt as a friend who means well. She might point you in the wrong direction every now and again, but once you realize that what she said was absolutely bonkers; once you learn how to conquer her, Doubt can push you to be your best self, and then juuust maybe you can turn a monster into a friend.
